0047 - Why study philosophy? - 2018.08.27

Comic!

Comment:

Don't get it twisted. As I've said, the setting of Forward doesn't have FTL and hasn't contacted extraterrestrial life. Quip Bruncklemeyer, in the second panel, there, is 100% human. Their green skin, like Lee's purple hair, is purely a cosmetic choice.

You might also notice that Quip's appearance is far more distracting and less modest than Zoa's, and you think it's some sort of hypocritical double standard that the teacher singled out the robot - that doesn't even have genitals - about its sartorial choices. The difference, you see, is that Quip's bare abdomen and peek-a-boo nipples are an expression of their individuality, whereas Zoa's cleavage is a mockery of the human form that serves purely as an advertisement for services that would be entirely inappropriate in a college setting. Perfectly consistent, you see.

0047 - 2167/07/06/10:08 - Rosenthal College, Phi building, classroom 1248
teacher: No doubt, you may be a little rusty from last semester, but I'm not going to take it easy on you. Who can tell me where Yonder's constant applies in this rotor diagram?
LC (whispering): Zoaaaaaaaaa
Zoa (whispering, holding LC's shoulder): Chill, Lee. Hold it down. Hold it down.
teacher: YOU! WHY ARE YOU STANDING UP?
----------------------
QB: Uh... I'm in the wrong class.
teacher: THE WRONG CLASS? YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT CLASS, MY FRIEND! AERONAUTICS! THIS IS THE FUTURE! WHAT CLASS DO YOU WANT TO BE IN?
QB: Intro to Western Philosophy?
teacher: PHILOSOPHY?!? WHY THE HELL DO YOU WANT TO STUDY PHILOSOPHY?!?
----------------------
QB: Uh... it's a prereq for my program?
teacher: Alright, alright, you're taking it because Rosenthal's forcing you to. Very tragic, my condolences.
QB: ...thanks. Can I go?
teacher: In a second.
----------------------
teacher: What about you, do you want to study philosophy?
OX: ...Yes.
teacher: Why?
OX: To get a perspective on world history?
teacher: Mm, that's a much better reason. You can't understand why people acted the way they did unless you know how they were thinking.
----------------------
teacher: What about you, Mezzer Zimmerman? You want to leave this aeronautics class and go study philosophy?
PZ: I do.
teacher: Why?
PZ: To understand how thought works. Logic. Reasoning. Deduction. How to work through an argument.
teacher: Good reason, good reason.
----------------------
teacher: How about you, Mezzer Caldavera, with your robotic friend? I notice you were one of the few people who didn't immediately stand up to leave my aeronautics class. Why not?
Zoa: Because their robotic friend read a review of this class before it signed Mezzer Caldavera up for it, it knows you are actually Orb Twofeather, this is Intro to Western Philosophy, and you pull this shtick every semester.
teacher: Spoilsport.
